Step:

  1. Soak tamarind in hot water for 20 mins, squeeze the pulp from the soaked tamarind and keep aside.

  2. Wash and pressure cook the dal for 7 to 8 whistles in 2 cups of water and a pinch of turmeric.

  3. When the pressure in the cooker settles down, open the lid and mash the dal with a masher. keep aside.

  4. Heat ghee in a pan and add mustard seeds, asafetida, curry leaves, green chilies and let them crackle..

  5. Add the dal and 1/4 cup water and stir well.

  6. Season with goda masala, jaggery, tamarind pulp, coconut, and salt.

  7. Simmer for 10-12 minutes with frequent stirring.

  8. Garnish with coriander and serve hot.

  1. 1/2 cup toovar dal
  2. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  3. 1 tsp seedless tamarind
  4. 2 tsp goda masala
  5. 1 tsp jaggery (grated)
  6. 2 tbsp grated coconut
  7. 1 tsp salt
  8. 1 sprig curry leaves
  9. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  10. 2 green chilli (slit)
  11. 1 tbsp ghee
  12. 1/4 tsp asafoetida
  13. 1 tbsp coriander leaves (chopped)
